Sen. Jon Tester waded into the floodwaters Thursday, pushing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to help homeowners and towns situated in the state’s many flood plains.
New requirements by the Federal Emergency Management Agency are forcing people living in the flood plains to either fork over hundreds of thousands of dollars to verify their levees are safe — or pay hundreds more for flood insurance.

A group of four U.S. senators have announced legislation to amend last year’s energy stimulus package so that it will focus only on those green projects that support American companies.
The legislation was proposed in a letter signed by Democratic Senators Charles E. Schumer, Bob Casey, Sherrod Brown and Jon Tester, who criticized the current stimulus package for siphoning money off to overseas countries.
The new legislation, called the American Renewable Energy Jobs Act, would amend last year’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which released $800 billion in new investment designed to kick start the U.S. economy.

Montana Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester have introduced legislation aimed at protecting the North Fork from mining, a response to similar protections recently enacted by the province of British Columbia.
The joint effort is aimed at preventing new mining and oil and gas development in the North Fork on both sides of the border.

KALISPELL – Business leaders are lobbying for a ban on mining west of Glacier National Park, saying a clean environment is critical to the region’s economy.
The area, said Kalispell Chamber of Commerce president Joe Unterreiner, plays “a very important part in our economic vitality.”
Unterreiner addressed his comments in a letter to Sen. Max Baucus, who on Thursday introduced legislation prohibiting mines in the North Fork Flathead River Valley.
